IKEJA ELECTRIC: Abesan people don’t vend!

Yesterday morning, I was speaking with an official of Ikeja Electric and from all we discussed, one thing I took home is that Abesan people don’t vend and so their revenue has dropped.

If you must have electricity supply through your prepaid meter, you must vend. Does it then mean people no longer use electricity? No, this is not true. What it actually means is that Ikeja Electric staff are still used to the old way of getting money from residents of Abesan. They still live in the past. It is now “pay as you go” you pay for what you consume and this has drastically reduced the revenue of Ikeja Electric in Abesan and maybe other places.

Another thing is that many people now stay in darkness until they have money to vend. “A night, maybe two isn’t too much till I can gather a chunk to subscribe”, someone once told me.

Usage of appliances is now also being monitored. Nobody leaves the security bulb switched on all day any longer. “Of what purpose is it to leave your freezer on when everywhere is frozen?” a resident asked me recently.

Ikeja Electric should sit up and query where their supply is being used and request for payment since they claim they are supplying and should be paid. It’s no longer an era for estimation. A good number of electricity users are now using prepaid. Those who haven’t are seriously looking for a way out, even if it means paying for it.

Abesan Estate is mainly occupied by old citizens, most of who have money but are not willing to spend especially on what they don’t get satisfaction from. Most of these flats are also occupied by grandmas and grandpas who rarely use electricity. Most of them don’t drink cold water, so they don’t need freezers. These are same people that were billed exorbitantly before prepaid meter came. Ikeja Electric really needs to wake up
