UBTH Discrimination against Pregnant women, Deny Staff Who are Pregnant Benefits, Allowances...                                  By Kanu Ahaoma

Any female staff of the University Of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) who gets pregnant has to either quit the job or keep working until they deliver. That is the directive that has been in place since the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Michael Ibadin, took charge of the Federal Tertiary Health Institution seven years ago.

According to the female workers at the hospital who raised their concerns about the trend, they have been working under very cruel conditions when they are pregnant that so many of the expectant staff have opted to carry their pregnancies to course while still on the job.

Can We Consider Fixing this Economy from the Bottom? By Simbo Olorunfemi

Simbo Olorunfemi
Economics is no exact science, we are told. But it does appear that to a school of thought whose hands have been more evident in shaping the economic direction of Nigeria, over the years, managing the economy is one esoteric science that only a coterie of experts are supposed to have an understanding of. One over which they enjoy a monopoly of knowledge. Yet, in the hands of this school, there has only been more of movement with little motion. Yet, when things go wrong, as they have often done, they shift the blame and place it on the patient. They led us on to the path of devaluation, promised foreign direct investment in return. We opened the window and those with a pile of forex to ship out have simply done so leaving us empty-handed. They now say it is our fault – we didn’t do it early enough. They now remember that the fundamentals are not in place. As if we did not say so then, in calling for caution, in throwing the naira under the bus.

Do We Still Need Economists in Nigeria?, By Simbo Olorunfemi

Simbo Olorunfemi

How will the devaluation of the Naira simply induce the production of local alternatives, when the conditions on the ground simply do not support such? How does a devalued Naira help? How will locally-produced goods become cheaper when the costs of the importation of machinery and other inputs would have gone up? How can you do anything meaningful at home with an interest rate of 20 percent?! Where is the incentive for banks to lend to the real sector when they only need to buy into treasury bills, bonds and round-trip forex? Which banks really? The same ones who now sell flight tickets, setting up shops to compete with their customers?

Drug Trafficker Arrested For Trying To Smuggle Cannabis Inform Of Indomie

According to the NDLEA spokesman Mitchell Ofoyeju, the cannabis was carefully prepared inside packs of noodles to avoid detection. The suspect identified as Benson Onyechi Esonwunne, was attempting to board an Ethiopian Airways flight from Nigeria to China when he convinced an innocent passenger to carry the box of packaged chicken flavored noodles for him on the plane. "It is instructive that people be aware of this trick because what they consider as an assistance may just send them to prison or early graves. This is because drug trafficking is punishable by death in China." Mr Ofoyeju said. The statement from NDLEA also said that Mr. Esonwunne had been deported from China two times prior for immigration offenses in 2008 and on May of this year. The suspect said that he began trafficking drugs because Nigeria’s economy was so poor, and its exchange rate so unfavorable, that he needed to turn to the illegal activity to get by. The NDLEA said the man will face charges for his crime.
