Prof. Dora Akunyili'd Daughter Sets New Auction Record

A new auction record was set for the Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby in New York last week when “Drown” soared to sell for $1,092,500, over three times the high-estimate ($200,000-$300,000), in Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale.

No fewer than 11 bidders competed for the work that was eventually sold to an anonymous buyer on the telephone. This was the second time in less than two months that the auction record for Njideka Akunyili Crosby had been broken at Sotheby’s. The previous auction record for the artist was $93,750, set by her “Untitled” work from 2011 at Sotheby’s New York in September 2016.

One Chance Operators Arrested in Lagos

The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State police Command have arrested four suspects for allegedly swindling members of the public of various sums of money.
The four suspects were picked up separately in three incidents of fraud at Maryland, Ojodu Berger and Ajegunle between Tuesday and Thursday last week. They are Kenneth Umukoro, 36; Uba Utokcha, 41; Joseph Onuoha, 40 and Ikechukwu Okeke, 25.
According to one of the victims, Ibeh Chiwenu, she was going to Ojodu Berger from Ojota when Umukoro stopped at the bus stop to pick her. She said: “As he drove along, he picked another passenger on Kudirat Abiola Way.

Married Football Club Manager Arrested For Raping His Male Players in Lagos

A football club manager, Frank Darlington, has been arrested by the Lagos state police command for allegedly sodomizing three of his teenage players in the Agege area of the state.

Darlington, the manager of Soccer Warriors Football Academy, Pen Cinema, was arrested last Thursday by the Elere Police Division, after one of the victims reported him to the police.

It was learnt that the club manager, who hails from Imo State, allegedly took three footballers to his house on separate occasions after training sessions, and raped them.

Man Dissolves in Acidic Water After Falling Into A Yellowstone Hot Spring

-Victim’s sister recorded on her cell phone, but the park service won't release the video.

A 23-year-old Oregon man literally dissolved inside a hot spring at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming after he accidentally fell into it.

The bizarre incident happened back in June, when Colin Nathaniel Scott went to the park with his sister to find a place to "hot pot."

According to a recently released report from park officials, Scott and his sister went to an unauthorized area near the Norris Geyser.

"They were specifically moving in that area for a place that they could potentially get into and soak," Deputy Chief Ranger Lorant Veress told KULR. "I think they call it hot potting."

Scott had reached down to check the temperature of a spring when he slipped and fell into it. Rescuers later found Scott's body inside the pool, but couldn't retrieve it because of a lighting storm in the area. When they came back the next day, no remains were found beneath the spring's churning, acidic waters.

"In a very short order, there was a significant amount of dissolving," Veress said.

The parks' geyers and springs are acidic because they are fed by thermal water deep underground that picks up sulfuric acid as it rises to the surface. The sulfuric acid is produced by microorganisms that break down hydrogen sulfide in rocks and soil.

Scott's sister was recording on her cell phone when he fell in, but the park service won't release the video.

Veress stressed the importance for park visitors to obey all warning signs.

"Because (Yellowstone) is wild and it hasn't been overly altered by people to make things a whole lot safer, it's got dangers," he said. "And a place like Yellowstone, which is set aside because of the incredible geothermal resources that are here, all the more so."

Flood Wrecks Havoc in Akowonjo Area of Lagos, Sacks Residents

Residents of Akowonjo in Alimosho Local Council of Lagos State are still counting their losses after Friday’s downpour. Although no life was lost, property worth millions of Naira were destroyed in the flood.

When The Guardian visited the areas, some of the residents were seen draining water out of their houses with the use of pumping machines. Others used buckets as they expressed their grievances over their plight.

Arik Air Aircraft With Over 100 Passengers Loses Engine Mid-Air Between Lagos & Jos

A potential plane crash in Nigeria was averted on Friday as an Arik Air aircraft lost one of its two engines mid-air with over 100 passengers on board.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737 with the registration number 5N-MJD, departed from Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, for Jos when the pilot discovered that the plane had lost one of its engines during the flight.

Ford shifts truck production from Mexico to Ohio

Ford's heavy duty pickup trucks which used to be built in Mexico started rolling off an assembly line in Ohio this week.
