Federal government seeks to withdraw firearm charges against suspended CBN governor, new charges filed instead

In a surprising turn of events, the Federal Government filed an application to withdraw the charge of illegal possession of firearms against the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, approached the Federal High Court in Ikoyi and stated that the withdrawal came as a result of further investigations.

However, Abubakar revealed that fresh charges with 20 counts had been filed against Emefiele at the Federal High Court in Abuja. This development was disclosed to journalists by Abubakar after the court proceedings concluded.

Back on July 25, Emefiele was arraigned on a two-count charge related to the "illegal possession of firearms" at a federal high court in Ikoyi, Lagos. Although the initial charges are being withdrawn, Emefiele now faces a new legal battle with the recently filed charges in Abuja.
