Lagos Assembly Suspends Alimosho Council Chairman Indefinitely

Jelili Sulaimon

The Lagos State House of Assembly has handed down an indefinite suspension to Jelili Sulaimon, Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, effective immediately.

During a plenary session on Monday, October 7, 2024, lawmakers unanimously voted for his suspension, citing alleged non-compliance, defiance, and unyielding attitude towards the legislative house.

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, moved the motion for suspension. He recalled the pandemonium that broke out in the Iyana-Ipaja axis of Alimosho Local Government in April 2024, resulting in the death of Mr. Micheal Ajayi.

Okanlawon stated that investigations revealed Jelili masterminded the chaos. Despite invitations, Jelili continued to show acts of misconduct towards the committee.

Additionally, Okanlawon highlighted Jelili's failure to adhere to the Assembly's directives and mismanagement of public funds.

Supporting the motion, Majority Leader Noheem Adams emphasized that Jelili's actions would serve as a deterrent to other local government chairmen.

Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, referenced the State Auditor-General's report, which underscored Jelili's consistent non-compliance with financial regulations.

Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the Assembly's resolution to relevant authorities.

The Vice Chairman, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, is to assume leadership of the council and the Council management is expected to recognize and support Johnson's authority.
