Nigerian Nurse Regains Freedom After 6-Year Boko Haram Captivity

Alice Loksha, a 42-year-old nurse, has been freed from Boko Haram captivity after being abducted in 2018 while working at a UNICEF office in Kala Balge, Borno State. Major General Wahdi Shuaibu, Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, North-East, announced her release alongside another abducted woman, Fayina Ali.

Traumatic Experience

Alice was forced into marriage with Abu Umar and had a son, Mohammed. After Abu Umar's death, she was forced into another marriage with ISWAP Commander Abu Simak. She escaped from Dogon Chuku camp on October 24, 2024, and received medical attention upon arrival at HQ TC on October 29, 2024 [1).

Fayina Ali was captured in 2020 while traveling from Kaduna to process her late brother's death benefits. She was initially held at Kangaruwa enclave for nine months, then transferred to Tumbunma for three years, and returned to Kangaruwa for another year before escaping.

Rehabilitation and Reintegration

Borno State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, commended the Nigerian Army for restoring peace in the Northeast region. The two women will undergo psychosocial support and rehabilitation before being reunited with their families.

The Boko Haram insurgency has devastated northeastern Nigeria, displacing millions and causing thousands of deaths. Kidnappings for ransom have become a lucrative funding source for the group
