LAGOS, Nigeria – March 3, 2026 — A viral video from Abia State Governor Alex Otti's recent monthly media chat has sparked widespread debate, with many accusing the once-praised leader of embodying the adage that power corrupts regardless of how one acquires it.

During the February 27, 2026, session in Umuahia, journalist Chika Nwabueze of Don Media Group posed a straightforward question: Could the governor provide verifiable data or measurable indicators showing how his administration's policies have improved the economic conditions and living standards of ordinary Abians beyond visible infrastructure projects like roads and healthcare facilities?

Rather than offering statistics, examples of welfare packages, job creation figures, or other evidence, Governor Otti reacted sharply. He described the question as "irresponsible" and "stupid," publicly rebuked the journalist, called him "stupid," questioned his professionalism and residency in Abia, and suggested the reporter should provide the data himself if he lived in Umuahia.

The exchange quickly went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from media watchdogs, opposition figures, and civil society groups. The International Press Centre (IPC), through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub, condemned the governor's response as a "verbal assault" and "condescending," emphasizing that elected leaders have a duty to account to citizens without humiliation. IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade described the outburst as unbecoming of a democratic officeholder.

APC chieftain Prince Paul Ikonne and veteran journalist Richard Akinola II echoed calls for a public apology, arguing that insulting a journalist for demanding accountability undermines transparency promises Otti made during his campaign and inaugural address. Some commentators drew parallels to authoritarian tendencies, noting that no leader should lash out over legitimate scrutiny.

Supporters of the governor, however, defended his reaction, praising him for refusing to entertain what they called poorly prepared or provocative questions. They highlighted Otti's monthly media engagements as a rare display of openness in Nigerian governance and suggested the journalist's query overlooked tangible achievements like road rehabilitation, primary healthcare improvements, and public transport initiatives.

The incident has fueled broader commentary on Nigerian leadership: that acquiring power—whether through elections, reformist zeal, or public goodwill—often reveals similar human frailties, including intolerance for criticism. Critics argue Otti, once celebrated as a refreshing alternative to entrenched politicians, now exemplifies how frustration or defensiveness can surface when challenged on performance metrics.

As the backlash grows, with demands for an apology and renewed focus on measurable governance, the episode serves as a reminder that true leadership is tested not just in delivering projects, but in handling scrutiny with composure and facts. Governor Otti has not yet issued a formal response to the widespread calls for contrition.
