Council Chairman Pledges Support for Displaced Abesan Estate Families, Calls for Preventive Building Maintenance

The Executive Chairman of Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Adunni Akindele Opeyemi, has assured residents of council support for six families displaced after the demolition of Block 421, Sector 21, Abesan Estate. The building was pulled down recently after structural defects rendered it unsafe for habitation.

The assurance came during an emergency meeting held on Sunday, July 19, with the Abesan Estate Residents Association (AERA). The meeting was attended by AERA executives, sector chairmen, and other key stakeholders in the estate.

Speaking at the gathering, Hon. Akindele expressed concern over the incident and pledged to personally meet with the affected families to explore ways of cushioning the impact of their displacement. She acknowledged the emotional and financial hardship the families now face and reaffirmed the council's commitment to supporting residents through difficult times.

Beyond the immediate relief effort, the council chairman used the occasion to stress the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining residential buildings across the estate. She urged residents to work together to ensure blocks are properly maintained, noting that regular inspections, prompt repairs, and adherence to safety standards remain essential to preventing similar structural failures in future.

She further called on sector executives and residents' associations to intensify sensitisation efforts on proper building maintenance, and to promptly report visible structural defects to relevant authorities for professional assessment and timely intervention.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing efforts by AERA to improve safety within the estate, with stakeholders highlighting the need for stronger collaboration between residents, community leaders, and government agencies to safeguard lives and property in Abesan Estate.

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, the Public Relations Officer of AERA, Odunewu Olusegun, said the association was pleased with the council's swift response and would continue working with the affected families and the local government to ensure adequate support is provided.
