Rotimi Obembe, Fan of Don Williams |
I was at Bukky’s place
behind my office (Alimosho Standard) yesterday to relax. I broke the news of the
death of Don Williams to everyone and I was surprised how Rotimi took the news.
Rotimi is in his late 20s, you would ordinarily expect an old guy to like Country
Music, but his case is different.
Rotimi, an Abesan resident, brought out his
phone that has almost a hundred tracks of Don William’s songs and started
playing. He almost wept. He told me it is a great loss to him despite that he
did not meet Don personally.
He came across Don Williams
10 years ago when he was working in a Laundry. His boss liked Country music and
Don especially so much that he also became a fan. There is virtually no song of
Don William that Rotimi doesn’t know.
He became a fan and
has never looked back since then. He says it is a great loss and prayed God
will give his family the fortitude to bear the great loss.
Don Williams,
who forged his own musical identity in the 1970s with a unique and low-key
style of country that earned him the nickname “The Gentle Giant,” passed away
today Friday, Sept. 8, 2017. He was 78. May his soul Rest in Peace.
