During a virtual stakeholders' meeting on
Thursday, September 14, 2023, Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IE)
announced that it would temporarily halt the acceptance of new orders for
prepaid meters. The decision came as a result of a backlog of requests that the
company needs to clear before proceeding with new orders.
Morenikeji Amosun, IE's head of prepaid
revenue management and metering, acknowledged the delay and stated that
customers who had already made payments for their meters would receive them in
due course. He emphasized the importance of patience during this process.
Addressing the issue, Amosun said, "We
have a backlog...we're not taking new orders. It will be unfair for those who
have already paid the previous price to not receive their meters, while those
paying the new price of N88,000 receive theirs."
Recently, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory
Commission (NERC) approved an increase in the prices of prepaid meters. As per
NERC, the cost of a single-phase meter rose to N81,975.16k from N58,661.69k,
while the price of a three-phase meter increased to N143,836.10k from
N109,684.36k. Please note that these approved meter prices do not include the
value-added tax.
IE is actively working to address the backlog
and ensure a seamless transition for customers who have already made payments.
Their commitment remains to provide efficient and reliable prepaid meter
services to their valued customers.
