16 Nigerian Universities Compete in STEM-Based Competition to Drive Innovative Solutions and Societal Impact
Lagos, Nigeria - The highly anticipated University Duel and Smart Challenge 2024 commenced this week, bringing together 16 of Nigeria's top universities to showcase their expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The competition aims to inspire students to leverage academic knowledge to address societal challenges through innovative technology.
According to Dr. Ore Sofekun, CEO of Foothold Advisors and key consultant for the event, "The University Duel and Smart Challenge empowers students to apply theoretical learning to real-world problems, fostering innovative solutions for societal betterment."
The competition consists of two key parts:
1. A quiz testing students' knowledge in STEM subjects.
2. A challenge to apply learned concepts to solve real-world problems using technology.
Participating universities were selected through a national computer-based test, with top-performing students grouped into four categories: premier universities, federal universities, state universities, and private universities.
The competition timeline includes:
- Quarter-finals (recorded on Friday)
- Final stages of the quiz and Smart Challenge (culminating in a grand finale in February/March 2025)
- Top three teams pitching refined solutions
Durojaiye Phillips, CEO of Innovia Labs and competition mentor/judge, emphasized the need for practical, relevant, and scalable solutions. "Nigeria requires innovative solutions to drive economic and societal growth," he said.
Phillips also stressed the importance of increased investment in STEM fields to create job opportunities for young graduates.

Group 2: Veritas University, Lagos State University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Obafemi Awolowo University
Group 3: Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, University of Nigeria Nsuka, University of Port Harcourt, Covenant University
Group 4: Kaduna State University, Achievers University, University of Benin, Yaba College of Technology
