President Bola Tinubu Set to Embark on Landmark State Visit to the United Kingdom
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will undertake a historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom from March 18 to 19, 2026, marking the first official state visit by a Nigerian head of state to the UK in 37 years.
The visit, at the invitation of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla, will take place at Windsor Castle. Buckingham Palace announced in February that President Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has accepted the royal invitation. The King and Queen will host the state visit, making it the highest level of diplomatic courtesy extended by the British monarchy.
This forthcoming engagement follows an earlier audience in September 2024, when King Charles received President Tinubu at Buckingham Palace. The upcoming visit is the first inward state visit from Nigeria since the late 1980s, with prior ones recorded in 1973, 1981, and 1989.
Security preparations are intensifying in the UK, with Thames Valley Police confirming expanded airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle on March 18 (from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.), along with road closures and a combination of visible and covert policing measures in coordination with the Royal Household and other agencies.
The itinerary is expected to feature an official reception at Windsor Castle upon arrival on March 18, followed by formal engagements with the royal family and potentially senior British officials. While detailed schedules remain to be fully released, discussions are anticipated to cover strengthened bilateral ties, trade and investment opportunities, security collaboration, cultural agreements, migration issues, and joint efforts on global challenges such as climate change and port infrastructure development.
The Hope Alive Initiative and other observers have described the invitation as a recognition of Nigeria's increasing global influence and President Tinubu's effective diplomatic engagement. The visit is viewed as a milestone in Nigeria-UK relations, symbolizing renewed partnership within the Commonwealth and beyond.
Domestic voices in Nigeria have called for the president to prioritize discussions on security partnerships and economic cooperation during the visit.
The state visit underscores the enduring and evolving bond between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
